Winter Solstice Parade

On the longest night of the year, Rathnelly residents light up the night in our neighbourhood with our annual Winter Solstice Parade. This Rathnelly holiday tradition is great fun for neighbours of all ages. We meet after dark at Hardy’s Corner, then parade through the laneways with lanterns, bells, and drums, stopping in at our neighbours sparkling decked out garages for goodies.

Special thanks to our WSP coordinator extraordinare, Nichole Anderson-Bergeron and her small but mighty team of volunteers who make this event such a special evening. Thanks also to those residents on Rebellion Lane who opened their garages and offered up hot drinks and sweet & savory treats for the enjoyment of revelers. And finally, thanks to Melissa & Keith Stein for donating a heap load of festive Krispy Kreme donuts - they were a huge hit with big and small residents alike!

You can check out photos from the most recent Winter Solstice Parade below. Have some good photos from past Winter Solstice Parades you’d like to share? Get in touch with us, and we can add them to the site.

Need some ideas for how to make your own lantern for the next Rathnelly Winter Solstice Parade? Our neighbour Nichole has you covered! She says: “One of the easiest ways is to take a 2L milk or juice carton and cut four windows in it, string some tissue paper around it, add an LED candle, use pipe cleaners for a handle, and you're all set!”
